Hoax to Hoax is a look behind the curtain to help you spot fakes when you see them.
As a videographer and editor, I’ve picked up a handful of tricks and techniques that have helped me spot the tell-tale signs of a hoax. Now, I want to help you spot them, too.
You may even pick up some DIY filmmaking or photography techniques along the way!
I may demonstrate how these effects are made, but I’m not here to teach you how to fool people! I do not condone, support, or encourage any dishonesty, fraud, etc.! I’m here to encourage creativity and critical thinking, and to teach you how to tell when someone else is trying to fool YOU.
Likewise, I am not trying to disprove any deep personal beliefs. If you believe in ghosts as a literal phenomenon, or that extraterrestrials are stopping by for house calls, that's fine. But no matter what I think of someone's personal beliefs, there are plenty of hoaxers out there willing to exploit those beliefs for profit. And that's not cool. I just want to make sure everyone has the tools they need to recognize a hoax when they see it.
Finally, everything on this page is based on opinion, informed by experience, research, and knowledge of specific crafts. If I use a specific example such as a photograph, video, etc., then I am saying this is how I THINK it was done, in my OPINION, which may be informed by the opinions and research of others whom I will cite. In my opinion, a photograph may be clearly faked, or a video may be clearly edited, but my goal is to show you WHY I think that.
So grab an old camcorder, some fishing line, and a hubcap… I mean, “flying saucer,” and let’s see what these hoaxes are made of! 🛸
